Chris Owen

Chris Owen was born in 1967 in the central Montana community of Billings. Summers spent on his Grandparent's ranch in the Judith Basin inspired his love of the western way of life, and his Grandpa's tales of having met the great C.M. Russell helped catalyze the desire to express this love through Art. After studying fine art at Montana State University Billings, Chris was awarded a scholarship to study at the Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles. Chris lives West of Billings, Montana.

Biography Continued.....

Chris Owen's paintings portray of the spirit and essence of the American cowboy. Owen depicts the human and equine figures with a genuinely personal and subjective approach, and with a sense of controlled spontaneity. Through his art, he bears the hopes, dreams and passions, not only for himself, but for all who live the American West.

"The Cowboy endures as the foremost American icon. He is the most compelling of characters and due to his romantic lifestyle and unique personality a natural subject of artistic interest. His ongoing endurance as the premier American cultural hero stands as testament to the spirit and values that have made the people of the West great."

Chris Owen's working cowboy themes are a representation of authentic, operating ranch activities. Once known for painting predominantly with gouache, he now paints with oils as well. Mr. Owen majored in art at Montana State University, and was later the recipient of a scholarship to the acclaimed Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, where he studied for two years. He shows at the Coors Western Art Exhibit in Denver, Colorado and was their official poster artist in 2003. He also shows at the Cheyenne Frontier Days, Governor's Invitational Art Show where he has won the "Museum Purchase" and "Limited Edition Print Artist" awards. His painting "A Cowboy's Morning" won the international "Benny Award" for the finest Giclee in 2006.
