The Lone Sentinel

by Frank McCarthy
| The
Lone Sentinel was not only artist Frank
McCarthy’s first Greenwich Workshop release, but the first western art
piece ever produced by Greenwich. McCarthy’s dramatic images of the
American West have gained a legion of admirers among art lovers and
critics alike, and Greenwich is proud to have brought his art to
collectors for the past thirty years. Whether his subjects are Native
Americans, mountain men, cavalry, or cowboys, McCarthy’s work has such
intensity that each painting literally involves the viewer in the
excitement on canvas. Although McCarthy is primarily known for the
action in his paintings, this calm, peaceful, brooding image of a
Northern Cheyenne guarding his village is one of his most iconic images.
War pony well concealed nearby, this sentinel squats atop a high rock outcropping that gives him a splendid vantage point, watching for the approach of hostile Native Americans or trappers who might menace his village’s most prized possessions: the horse herd. |
